BACKGROUND OF TALL SHIP DEFENDER |
|
| Constructed from Australian timber in 1896, measuring 115ft in length overall with a 22ft beam. The builder was George Frost, a shipwright responsible for constructing 22 vessels.
Tall Ship Defender was constructed for inter-state trading and voyages to the emerging colonial settlements across Australia. Most of her service involved navigating the coastal passages of Southern Australia, operating regularly between Victoria and Tasmania.
She was initially registered in Launceston, Tasmania, where she became known for exceptional speed. History records her November 1923 feat as a record-setting Bass Strait passage completed in under 24 hours.
During World War II, Tall Ship Defender served with the Australian navy, transporting military personnel and cargo. Following the war's conclusion, she returned to Tasmania where she deteriorated over time.
During the 1980s, Les Dick undertook a comprehensive restoration of Tall Ship Defender, returning her to her original condition just before the 1988 Bicentennial Hobart to Sydney Tall Ships Race. Today, Tall Ship Defender has undergone further renovation and operates among the Whitsunday Islands. Under the Australian Tall Ship Cruises brand, she complements the well-known four-masted Tall Ship Solway Lass, which was constructed in Holland in 1902. |
